Find Your Doula

The purpose of this web-site is to provide a place where parents can access information about doulas and breastfeeding support in the Greater Victoria area.  A doula is a woman experienced in childbirth, who provides strength, knowledge and comfort to the birthing woman during her pregnancy, birth and postpartum.

On this website, we list both birth and postpartum doulas.  To learn the differences, please refer to the page entitled A Doula’s Role.

Doula

Questions to ask a doula during your first contact over the phone:

  • Are you available for my due date?
  • What training have you had?
  • Are you certified?  If so, by what organisation? (If a doula is certified, you might consider checking with the organisation to verify.)
  • Do you have one or more backup doulas for times when you are not available?  May we meet with the backup doula?
  • What is your fee?  What does your fee include?  What are your refund policies?

Questions to ask when interviewing a birth doula:

  • How do you support women and partners through labour?
  • When will we meet to discuss our birth plans and the role you will play in supporting us through childbirth?
  • May we call you with questions or concerns before and after the birth?
  • When do you try to join women in labour?  Do you come to our home or meet us at the place of birth?
  • Do you meet with us after the birth to review the labour and answer questions?

Please Note:  When hiring a doula, it is the consumer's responsibility to check the doula's training, experience and/or certification.  The right to practice as a doula is not restricted by law, the way being a doctor or a midwife is.  Not all doulas are trained or certified but they may still be experienced and offer valuable support.  The Greater Victoria Doula Directory is not a partnership, it acts only as a source of information.  Each doula listed on this site is a sole proprietor.
